Ordered a part that turned out to be the wrong fit? Received something damaged? Or simply changed your mind? Whatever the reason, returning an item should never feel like an annoying task. This article explains exactly how returns, exchanges and refunds work at AUTODOC — so you know what to expect, what your rights are and how to get your money back as quickly as possible.
If you've ever wondered whether AUTODOC is legit, safe or reliable when things don't go to plan, the answer is in the process itself. A company's returns policy is one of the clearest signals of how trustworthy it really is.
Your right to return
As a consumer purchasing from AUTODOC, you have a 14-day return window from the date of delivery. Within this period, you can return any unused item in its original packaging without giving a reason.
A few important points to keep in mind:
- Items must be unused, unmodified and undamaged to qualify for a full refund
- Return shipping costs are at your expense unless you activated the Safe Order option at checkout
- Tyres and rims also follow the standard 14-day return deadline with tyres not being eligible for the Safe Order option
- Core parts (exchange items) have a return deadline of 12 months from delivery — more on those below
The Safe Order option: 200 days to change your mind
If you'd like more flexibility, AUTODOC offers the Safe Order option at checkout. Activating this for a small fee extends your return window from 14 days to 200 days — giving you ample time even for seasonal vehicles or longer repair projects.
The Safe Order option applies per order and is only available for items sold directly by AUTODOC (not third-party sellers on the AUTODOC Marketplace). It does not cover bulky items, core parts or tyres.
Simple steps to submit a return request
The fastest and most reliable way to return an item is through the AUTODOC Returns Portal at autodoc.co.uk/returns. This is the single most important thing to know if you're planning a return.
Evgheni Colun, Customer Feedback & Reputation Expert at AUTODOC, explains why the portal matters from an operational perspective on LinkedIn:
"When a package arrives at the warehouse without being linked to an order, a real detective story begins. It takes our colleagues hours and sometimes days, to identify the sender, find what was ordered and establish why the goods were returned. During this time, the customer is waiting for their refund — and we look slow. Nobody benefits from this situation."

The fix is straightforward. As Colun describes it:
"It only takes three clicks and it really speeds up the process: select the order — the system immediately knows what is waiting in the warehouse. Specify the reason — this helps us understand what went wrong. Get a label — the customer can track the parcel and the system automatically prepares the refund."
In practice, here's how it works: .png)
- Go to My Orders in your account and select the relevant order
- Click Returns and Support — you'll be taken directly to the Returns Portal
- Select the item, choose a return reason, upload a photo to speed up processing and submit
- You'll receive a confirmation and return instructions by email — check your spam folder
- Send the item using the provided label, ideally via a tracked courier service
If you don't have an account, you can still access the portal via the Returns and Support link in the site footer — you'll just need your postcode and order number.
How long does a refund take?
Once AUTODOC receives and processes your returned item, a refund is typically issued within 7 business days.
After AUTODOC issues the refund, the time it takes to reach your account depends on your payment method:
- PayPal: 1–3 business days
- Bank card: 1–3 business days
- Bank transfer: 1–14 days
If you haven't received your refund within the above timeframes, contact the customer support team via the live chat on autodoc.co.uk.
Warranty claims
AUTODOC's warranty claim filing period is 24 months from the date of delivery. This covers manufacturing defects and parts that fail under normal use.
To submit a warranty claim, go to My Orders, select the relevant order and choose "Return or replace item". Select "Warranty claim" as the reason, include a description of the fault and attach a photo. You'll then receive instructions by email.
Bear in mind that if the item needs to be sent back to the manufacturer for examination, the process can take 6–8 weeks. This is a standard part of the manufacturer's assessment procedure — not a delay on AUTODOC's side. You'll be kept informed via email throughout.
Core parts (exchange Items). How the deposit system works
Some parts — such as alternators, brake callipers and starters — are sold as core parts, which means a deposit (core charge) is added to your order. When you return the old unit from your vehicle, this deposit is refunded.
Key points to know:
- You have 12 months from delivery to return the used core part
- Return shipping is at your expense, even with Safe Order activated
- The used part must be in a perfect condition — no cracks, no severe corrosion, no missing components
- Once received, the examination process typically takes 6–8 weeks
- The refund is issued via the same method as your original payment
Why specifying your return reason actually helps everyone
It might feel like a formality, but the reason you select when submitting a return genuinely makes a difference. As Evgheni Colun explains:
"When the reason for the return is indicated, we receive invaluable first-hand information. This helps us understand which items should be excluded from the range, where the product description needs to be revised or where cooperation with the supplier needs to be reviewed. Honest feedback is a direct path to improving service for all our customers."

Is AUTODOC legit, safe and reliable when it comes to returns?
These are fair questions to ask of any online retailer. Is AUTODOC any good when something goes wrong? Is AUTODOC trustworthy with refunds?
The structure of AUTODOC's returns process — a transparent portal, clearly defined timelines, full consumer rights under UK and EU law and a 24-month warranty claim window — reflects the practices of a reliable, established online retailer. AUTODOC has been operating since 2008 and in 2025 served over 9.3 million active customers across 27 European countries. The returns framework is built to handle volume at scale without cutting corners on consumer rights.
The clearest advice we can give: use the Returns Portal, include a photo where relevant and select an accurate return reason. That single procedure is what separates a smooth, fast refund from an unnecessarily drawn-out process.
